Checkout abandonment is one of the biggest problems faced by online retailers, because ecommerce sites rely on people making purchases. Listrak reports that 74% of carts were abandoned over the last six months (August 2014 – January 2015).
We’ve all done it, filled our online basket with things we would love to buy, but realistically we are just taking an interest and browsing the latest fashion, and within a few hours (or minutes!) it’s put to the back of your mind, never to return. More than half of visitors who fill shopping carts are simply expressing interest.
Although there are many reasons why people abandon their shopping carts, most of these can be addressed and the biggest improvements are often felt with changes to the checkout process.
Complexity of purchase, poor layout and distracting visual elements can all contribute to low conversion rates. Other factors such as no guest checkout, high shipping costs, hidden charges and a lack of clear delivery details, all add up to a poor ‘user experience’ that does little to encourage customers to click “Process Order”. But do not despair, these can be easily rectified and overcome to help reduce checkout abandonment and increase online sales.
