Beat the January Blues

Feeling glum?Be Happy

All the Christmas biscuits have been eaten, the decorations have been taken down, and you’ve just seen your bank balance! There is indeed not much going for the third Monday of the year, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if you or your customers are starting to feel a little gloomy.

But don’t panic, you are not alone. Blue Monday has well and truly started; rain, debt and dark wintery days make the 19th January the most miserable day of the year.

The theory of Blue Monday dates back to 2005, when UK psychologist Cliff Arnall created an elaborate mathematical formula; {[W + (D-d)] x T^Q} ÷ [M x N_a] to calculate the most miserable day of the year.

According to the formula, w stands for weather, d for debt, T is time since Christmas, Q is time since New Year’s resolutions were failed, M for low motivational levels and Na as the feeling of wanting to take action. (Note: D was not defined in the initial release.)

So what can we do to keep ourselves and others motivated and happy?

Mental Health Research UK has previously suggested we dress in colourful clothes to bring a smile to someone’s face. Others suggest we embrace the outdoors by sitting near a window, or heading outside for brief walks during the day to make sure we get the extra little bit of daylight and fresh air.

Having happy customers is like having your own advertising agency, satisfied customers are more likely to tell friends or business associates about you, and word-of-mouth advertising influences people to buy a product or service more often than any other form of advertising.

On the other hand, negative comments and unhappy customers can have a lasting effect on your business too.  News of bad customer service reaches more than twice as many ears as praise for a good service experience.  It takes 12 positive experiences to make up for one unresolved negative experience.

So with more customers potentially in a miserable mood and therefore more likely to make a complaint this January, you want to be making every effort to keep a smile on their face.

If you’re wondering where to begin in ensuring your customers leave your store with a hundred happy comments, the first place to start would be you and your staff. Smile! Smiling is contagious and it makes us feel better, and as the Chinese proverb states: “A man without a smiling face must not open a shop”.

The internet is full of busy shoppers trying to light up their January by getting some retail therapy, and with social media being very popular in the search for good deals; it’s a great place to promote an offer, or a special discount. Can you think of a creative or humorous way to deliver a BOGOF offer? Perhaps you could create your very own fun Vine video.

Organising a fancy dress day for your staff, will not only cheer up your staff and co-workers it will create a sense of fun and customers will embrace this. Or do something out of the ordinary, like handing out balloons to your younger audience, or offering cupcakes and goodies as a good will gesture.  Inviting your clients to fundraising auctions or special events are also good ideas.

As long as your event is safe and doesn’t put anyone at risk of physical danger or emotional upset, then you’re on the right lines!

How will you beat the blues?
