Microsoft has just rolled out an update for Hotmail to make it ready for Windows 8 and it’s going after Google – Microsoft claims that unlike Google it doesn’t sell information to advertisers. The latest update will give all Hotmail users the chance to update their email address to either a replacement or a secondary email address at Outlook.com. Although there isn’t much different in terms of functionality apart from making it easier to filter out the spam messages such as newsletters and offers they will be adding Skype; a chat service that allows you to make calls from your computer and connect to others.
Microsoft have started to re-evaluate their design strategy, with this design as well as their UI for Windows 8 and Windows mobile they are trying to create a cleaner and more concise user interface. They’ve decided to go with a Blue / White colour scheme and get rid of the orange they used for so long which shows they are aiming to freshen up their interface rather than recycling old design elements. With this design going live and the new style of metro design which is heading to desktops next year and is already featured on their Windows phone is a new era for Microsoft. Hopefully this will level the playing field between to technology giants, at very least it will show consumers that Microsoft are turning over a new leaf by putting usability and functionality first.
