With the recent decision by Marks & Spencer to make a return to Europe after an absence of 10 years, the question arises of who will be coming to the UK?
Over the past couple of years there have been repeated rumours of a comeback for the much loved C&A. The German brand packed up and retreated across the channel in 2000, but is the time now right for them to fill the gap left by the sale and subsequent downsizing of PEACOCKS?
Another foreign brand with the cash and resources to stage a move to the UK is Target. They already have stores in the US and Australia, which both have similar markets to the UK. The only potential stopper could be a recent move into the Canadian market which has taken up much of their cash flow and management resources.
What is clear however, is that the continuing uncertainty in the Eurozone makes the UK an enticing possibility for many global retail businesses looking to expand into new markets. The retail sector remains relatively buoyant and a stable Pound compared to the Euro makes it easier to plan strategies for the next few years.
